8 Reasons to Look Forward to Spring in Berlin

Spring is a wonderful time to visit Berlin. The weather is milder, the days are getting longer and the cherry blossom trees inject colour throughout the city. There are plenty of outdoor activities to be enjoyed, from festivals, markets, park runs, open-air cinemas and famous beer gardens. Flea Markets 

During the warmer months the flea markets are a great place to wander and discover hidden treasures. Its a much more enjoyable and relaxed approach to shopping and and there is nothing more thrilling than browsing through vintage stools that are brimming with all kinds of wonderfully quirky and unique things (especially at a bargain).

Spring Festivals 

Maifest (May Day Festival) is one of Berlin's most highly anticipated spring festivals and falls on the 1st of May. It marks the beginning of the warmer season and features street colourful parades, open-air concerts, and many lively celebrations. Neighbourhoods gather to host huge parties, and the day is filled with dancing, music, and protests. It is a great time to experience Berlin’s culture and social activism.

Park Runs & Marathons 

A local park run or a marathon is even more appealing during the spring time compared to the extremes of summer or winter. The parks are bursting with life as the trees and flowers are in bloom and the crisp spring air is refreshing. Not only is it a great way to enjoy scenic routes that you might have missed but it is also a great way to meet fellow travellers and mix with the locals. Running through a new city whether a park run or marathon is a wonderful way to create lasting memories and helps to keep you active whilst travelling. During the spring time you can sign up for the half marathon that takes place in April (6th) or the Wings for life world run in May (4th). The Mauerpark Run, a popular 5k run in Berlin, takes place every Sunday at 10am, with the first run of the year on the 11th May. 


Outdoor Cafes & Beer Gardens 

With the sun making an appearance the cafes open their terraces and people flock to the beer gardens. Beer garden season typically kicks off in April and Café am Neuen See and the historic Prater Garten (Berlin's oldest beer garden) are among the locals favourites. Head to these to enjoy a huge selection of beers whilst soaking in Berlin's vibrant atmosphere.  


Open-air Events 

Carnival of Cultures (Karneval der Kulturen)

Taking place this year from 6th-9th June the annual multicultural festival celebrates diversity. Vibrant parades, street performers, live music and delicious food stalls offering delicacies from all around the world take over the city.

Berliner Beer Week

The Berlin Beer Week is a celebration of craft beer and is taking place from the 29th August to the 7th September, featuring outdoor tastings, events, and open-air beer gardens. Local breweries and beer experts offer tastings, special events, and guided tours.

Berlin's Open-Air Cinemas

As the days grow longer, Berlin's outdoor cinemas open for the season. These open-air screenings take place in beautiful park settings and offer everything from classic films to contemporary favourites. It’s a unique experience to watch a movie under the stars, surrounded by the lively atmosphere of Berlin in spring.

Cycling in Berlin!

Exploring the city on bike is a fantastic way to see more during your time here. There are plenty of cycle routes that you can choose from. You'll be able to tick off everything on your bucket list and more! One particular route is a favourite if you want to explore more of the city centre.

Start at Brandenburg Gate, then cycle along Unter den Linden, passing landmarks like The Reichstag (German Parliament), the Berlin Cathedral, and Museum Island. Continue to Alexanderplatz, a bustling square with the iconic TV Tower. This route lets you hit all the must-see sights in central Berlin. You’ll get a feel for the city’s vibrant mix of history, culture, and modern life.


Park and Gardens 

Tiergarten

Berlin’s most famous park, Tiergarten, is a large, lush green space in the heart of the city. In spring, it’s the perfect place to enjoy blooming flowers, trees, and peaceful walks. There are also various monuments and statues scattered throughout the park. With plenty of paths, a beautiful lake, and the opportunity to spot wildlife like birds and squirrels, Tiergarten is a relaxing spot for a spring day out.

Charlottenburg Palace Gardens (Schlossgarten Charlottenburg)

The gardens surrounding Charlottenburg Palace are a magnificent sight in spring, with beautifully manicured flower beds, fountains, and grand avenues lined with trees. It's a perfect blend of history and nature, offering a peaceful stroll through royal gardens, especially as the flowers bloom and the trees start to leaf out in the warmer months.


Cherry Blossoms 

During the spring months the cherry blossom trees in Berlin burst into life. There is even a festival dedicated to them which shows just how beautiful and magnificent they really are.

Berlin's annual festival will take place in the Gardens of the World on the 5th and 6th of April. The event celebrates the cherry blossom season, which takes over parts of the city, especially around the famous Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees at the former Tempelhof airport. The festival includes performances, delicious food stalls, and traditional Japanese art, making it a truly wonderful way to greet the season of spring.
